Choosing between Growth and Glory

چکیده
Prior work has established that the financing environment can impact firm strategy. We argue that this influence can shape the earliest strategic choices of a new venture by creating a potential tradeo↵ between two objectives: rapid growth and reaping the benefits of a positive reputation (glory). We identify a simple reputation-building strategic choice, naming the firm after the founder (eponymy), that is associated with superior profitability. Next, observing that firms with high-growth aspirations are rarely eponymous, we argue via a formal model that the availability of/dependence on external financing can explain why. We find empirical support for the model’s predictions using large datasets of European and American firms. For example, eponymous firms grow considerably more slowly than similarly profitable firms. Eponymy is also less likely in regions with greater financial development and in industries with greater dependence on external financing. We discuss implications for the literature on new venture strategy.

Fate of radioactive gibberellin a(1) in maturing and germinating seeds of peas and Japanese morning glory.
Radioactive gibberellin A(1) ((3)H-GA(1)) was injected into excised fruits of peas and Japanese morning glory. These were then grown in sterile culture to maturity and the label was followed in the seeds during further development and subsequent germination. During development of both pea and morning-glory seeds a large part of the radioactivity became associated with the aqueous fraction, whil...

A pathogenic isolate of Fusarium, F. oxysporum f. sp. batatas O-17 (PF), causes wilt disease in leaf etiolation in sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) and morning glory (Ipomoea tricolor). Extracts from PF cultures were screened for phytotoxic components using a growth inhibition assay with morning glory seedlings. The extracts were fractionated using differential solvent extraction and two active c...
متن کاملThe evolutionary potential of Baker's weediness traits in the common morning glory, Ipomoea purpurea (Convolvulaceae).
PREMISE OF THE STUDY Many reports have cited Baker's list of weediness traits, or those that exemplify the "ideal" weed, yet few have considered the evolutionary potential of such traits as a group. Thus, it is unknown whether constraints on the evolution of increased weediness, such as a lack of genetic variation or genetic correlations between the traits, are present. Ipomoea purpurea, the co...

In recent decades, many dams have been built or are under construction. Due to the high demand for water and soil erosion, increasing the need for dam construction in different regions are quite tangible. In 1900 the number of large dams, did not exceed 50. But in the 1950s to 1986 the number of large dams (over 15 meters), more than 39,000 were counted. The 70s dams has been increasing develop...
متن کاملNumerical Study on Effect of Vertical Shaft Geometry on Seismic Responses of Morning Glory Spillways Case Study: Alborz Dam
Morning Glory Spillways are an important type of flood evacuation systems. According to the specific hydraulic and structural conditions, the evaluation of the seismic behavior of these kinds of spillways could be more precise with considering the interaction of the solid-water-foundation system. In this research, a three dimensional modeling of the morning glory spillway was conducted, conside...
